Post subject:  Any Singers in the house?

I have been trying to sing for....well ...15+ years. I've taken vocal lessons after vocal lessons ::got serious 10 years ago:: (although i gave up for a while I must admit). Now... I do feel like i've improved some, new sensations etc.

I sing...loud. Partly because my opera teacher back in California encouraged me to do this. I also have Brett Mannings singing with success and Mastering the Mix (i felt more improvement with mastering the mix than singing with success). and my voice.....still, according to my new teacher, sounds tense. I still lack the 'beautiful crips clean' "OMG he can sing?!!?" quality that people have. I keep hearing people explain what i'm suppose to do and what i'm NOT suppose to do, which sometimes are contradictory.

I LOVE it when I feel that I did something different, or my voice doesn't hurt. I'm.....just......not.....getting it. Seems to be the motto of my life apparently. Maybe my head injury when i was 5 years old, when I fell off the roof of a house and almost died, has some factor, but I don't know (hense the reason my left ear doesn't work). I just don't get it.

Now if you know the brett manning system you are familiar with the exercises i do...lip trills, nay's, ng's, etc... And now that I can practice those with ease (mostly) but my voice STILL sounds ... unprofessional. Do any of you singers have any recommendation that you felt REALLY helped you change from 'ugly' sound to 'omg i can't believe he just did that?' Are there any other types of uh...lessons that can be purchased that REALLY immensely helped you? I swear I'M GOING TO SING BEFORE CHRIST RETURNS OR DIE TRYING! Can't be a failure at everything!

First of all,
pretty impressive for a five year old
to even get to a roof.

As for singing, there's the expression
regarding "having an ear" for music
so probably the left side injury is irrelevant
since it would already be "in you"

there are amazing people
who can play an instrument "by ear"
and never take a lesson yet play so well

that musical ear also lends itself
to an ability to speak other languages
and not sound like a cowboy in that language,
have you been able to speak another language
and been told you sound fluent or like a native speaker?

singing can be technical
where you get trained professionally
and can perform well when your voice is mixed with a group
but when performing solo
the audience doesn't feel it, it doesn't resonate with them

of course, there are days when i just can't feel the song
but then there are moments
my audience is mesmerized,
the room is still, the room is perfectly quiet,
they're all hushed and listening
and i see smiles or stunned faces

i usually give up right away on anyone who can't carry a tune
but you seem to know the technical well enough,
so when you sing
have you ever sung and FELT the song?
felt like you're ready to cry and can't continue?
then THAT'S when you continue
because now your heart will translate to your voice
and your audience will feel it

all of a sudden
technical
becomes personal

i do a lot of improv,
i can't read notes,
i am no professional
i just sing because it makes people feel good

google Lettice Rowbotham the improv violinist
who doesn't fit into orchestras
because she's always straying from the page,
she's a technically proficient and well trained violinist
but she can't help but play with her heart

a great way to feel a song
is to sing harmony to it
because there won't likely be any sheet music for it,
harmony in itself can sound like crap
as Crosby Stills and Nash recently discovered
when their lead mike didn't work,
but harmony adds essence to a song,
enhances emotion and feelings
to the lead singer

i've done a lot of harmony to the radio in my car,
it's cheap personal training
and pretty effective
(for me anyways)

have a great day
good luck on your quest

Everything is fine. I've been away for multiple reasons. I did put this up in a category that I thought would represent randomness. Just trying to find association of fellow singers.

Any injury I have caused you Armand I apologize for and hope you can forgive me.

I have taken your pain to heart. I hope you are well and ask for any forgiveness for my previous remarks that have bothered you. I assure you, I am in no way, racist or anything of sort, you may discuss the matter with the Master to confirm.

I'm just too stupid for my own good.

As we all can be at times, dear V.

Peace to you and to dear Armand. I've no doubt you dear brothers can find a place of peace between you, as Christ wishes... and gives.

Your servant, sister, and a slave of Christ,

Shel
