Because of the lip on the stairs, and it looks weird that the other end of the stairs would be floor instead of a wall.

I also just googled pictures for cats going upstairs and cats going downstairs, and because of how they looked, I will stick with my answer ; )

Look behind the cat,there`s trees..
We only see the upper part of the trees..
If we were looking down a stair case,we`d be able to see the base of the trees..
So,I`m guessing..
The picture was taken from the bottom of the stair case..
The cat is going down the stairs..

What trees?? I don' see no trees...

Look to the top right of the hallway where the cat is coming down..
You`ll see the top of a tree..
Once you see the top of that tree..You`ll be able to make out the other trees..
It took me a while to figure that out..
Everything is so faded..

Yes..The tail is a huge clue..

The top of the tree is there:.........................top right hand corner..You see a bit of sky..Then the tree..

You can see the walls of the hallway..That is a good starting point..
They are your frame,like a picture frame.......To looking behind the cat to the open world,the outdoors..
Look at the right wall as though it were a picture frame..
Look to the extreme top right inside the picture frame.......You see a small,much lighter area,that is the sky..
Now look down just a little,at the dark area..You`ll see the shape of the top of a tree..
Once you can see that tree,your eyes will adjust to see the rest of the trees..

(sorry, lol... but that is just what came to mind about myself when I sat here and stared at that part of the wall, trying to make my eyes see a tree that I just do not see. Peace!)
