I know they are just reading a psalm, but all I could think was 'coven of witches'.

OHHHhhhh... I got (bad) chills and flashbacks from THAT, dear 'At (mornin' and peace to you, dear sister!). I used to "think" just that when I was THERE and "we" were reciting a verse - LOLOLOL! It was like when the speaker would misquote, misapply, misstate, or misinterpret a scripture/verse... and I would look around and see a sea of heads nodding in agreement. I was always SO nervous about that! I couldn't fathom why someone didn't correct the error! I mean, weren't our LIVES (supposedly) on the line? Then why not someone SPEAK UP and say, kindly and lovingly, of course, "Excuse me, dear brother, but doesn't the verse say...?" or "Pardon me, my brother, I know you probably didn't mean to misspeak, but I think the verse actually says... means..."

But... nope. MUCH better to let the lie lay... and put EVERYONE'S chance at everlasting life on the line... than possible OFFEND dear Brother Pride and Haughtiness. No, no, can't risk HIS delicate ego... for the sake of TRUTH (and possibly snatch his ass, along with everyone else who's agreeing with him, out of the fire!) - never may THAT happen!

Anyway, yes, I "feel" what you mean, too. CREEPY, IMHO.

Thanks for sharing that, dear lady.

Again, peace to you and to your dear household!

YSSFS of Christ,

Shel

I know! Remember how the WT always taught that it had never rained on the earth until the Flood of Noah's day? Then in the late 90's, I think it must have been, a wt came out that said they could not say that for sure because the bible was so condensed and did not tell all the details from that time period.

Well, when we were having the wt study that Sunday ( and we were having the condensed version, because the circuit overseer was there that day, so paragraphs were not read before hand) when they asked the question, a person raised his hand and answered the old answer!!!!

I thought my neck was going to snap off looking up to see what the conductor was going to say about it. He said his little bit, like they do you know, then called on someone else, and they only added to the wrong answer. I started to realize this elder did not read his wt. I looked at the other elders to see if there was any sign of them recognizing something was wrong. I kept thinking, why are they not correcting these people (in a loving way, of course)? That's their job; they've never minded doing it ever. And because it was the circuit overseer's visit, we had new interested people there. I did not understand how every one of the elders let that go; I thought, well I guess it's going to be up to the circuit overseer to set the matter straight, but he never said a word, and the meeting just continued.

I realized later that none of those people had really read their wt; if any of us in the audience knew, as I did, about the correction, they weren't speaking up either, and I also was afraid to speak up, but I think that I just kept waiting for one of the men to set it straight and then the time had passed.

It really was unbelievable to me. How embarrassing for those elders and, omg, the circuit overseer, not having a clue. But that was not the last time it happened.

Okkaaayyy?? (Peace to you, again, dear At!). And in many cases not just "really" read it, but read it at ALL... OR understood it (or caught the lies/discrepancies) if they did!

'Cause nobody wanted their head handed to them on a platter - LOLOLOL! Me? I didn't care. If they called on me for a paragraph... and something was left "hanging" from a previous paragraph... you can BET I addressed it, if the speaker gave me the chance! LOLOLOL! But it never got me in trouble, per se. I am SURE some folks didn't like it (usually, the alpha pioneer sister and/or alpha elder's wife... or their groupies... or the next in line to aspire to such. But I never got any flack from the elders, brothers, etc. Got a WHOLE lot of "I never thought of that/looked at it that way", though. And THAT surprised ME - I was like, "Didn't you READ the...???" I only came to understand after having left for some time that MOST folks didn't really READ the WT... OR their Bible).

I was never afraid to speak up. But that's because I took their words seriously: we were "supposed" to (1) thoroughly study our WTs, as well as (2) be "like the Beroeans" (something they CONSTANTLY "reminded" us to "be like") and look up EVERY scripture/verse so me... being me... did "just so." They said do it, so I did it.

I totally get that!

Hmmm... I'm not sure they had enough humility in them to be embarrassed, dear sister. Remember, they had the excuse of being "SO busy" with "congregation matters" that we were supposed to cut THEM some slack (for not studying THEIR WTs or looking up verses, i.e., being like the Beroeans).

I know, I know... me getting wordy again. Sorry, but I hadn't reminisced as to being a JW in a while so this topic "took me back" a bit. Thanks for sharing it!

Peace to you and your dear household!

YSSFS of Christ,

Shel
