It seems a stretch to me to hear that Christ goes back to the world of the dead
While I can see that perhaps giving those there an opportunity to repent might seem a stretch, we do have John's revelation to tell us that he at least goes back to OPEN the pit, yes?
Revelation 9:1 So we can know he goes back.

and gives them the opportunity to repent and put faith in him.
Let me ask you: which is MORE important to God and Christ - judgment? Or mercy? Which would be merciful? To ignore those there who (1) had no chance put faith in him (because the good news hadn't reached them before they died), and/or (2) are the sons of Abraham who did not put faith in him? Or to give them a chance to do so? If he did it for those of Noah's day... and NOAH preached about him, yes, because he was a "preacher of RIGHTEOUSNESS"... where is the justice, if NOT mercy... in not doing so for those after?
If God does not want ANY to die (be destroyed), would He not give opportunity as Christ suggests COULD have been done... in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus? Did not that Rich Man repent? True, he still had to go to the world of the dead... but the resurrection had not occurred yet. Should we assume the Rich Man is resurrected to judgment? On what basis? If he, even though dead, PUT FAITH in Christ... would that not grant him a resurrection to LIFE?
Now, I get it - we all have some strongly entrenched things in us... including what WE believe is "righteous" judgment. But we're supposed to be looking for MERCY... for ALL... yes? But let's look at what you state next, because I think this might be why you believe he WOULDN'T go/it CAN'T be done:
Quote:
I mean, my thinking of death is that their "thoughts do perish" and "the dead know nothing at all." (Psalm 146:4; Eccl 9:5)
This is TRUE. BUT... is not Christ THE LIFE? When he took me there, those who were (asleep in) death WOKE UP. Not enough to stand up, to have thoughts, to live (again) but just enough to ask the question (whether whatever it is they had been waiting for - and they didn't even have enough life in them to know they HAD been waiting... or WHAT it was they were waiting FOR). Just enough to (barely) ask... then fall back asleep when "it" was not. Why did they wake up? Because... HE IS THE LIFE. Where GOD is... LIFE is. And so, now, with Christ... where HE is... LIFE is. Thus, it was HIS PRESENCE... his DYNAMIC ENERGY... that brought (enough) LIFE into that place so that those there "woke up", even if just for a second.
Like... I KNOW... like a magnet. You know, how you pass a magnet over some metal shards and they all "rise" up? Like that! Because of the ENERGY coming from the magnet, the SHARDS move. SAME THING: because of HIS "life force"... THEY woke up! Just a tad. Because he didn't turn ON his "life" FULL force. Another way to describe it is like a geiger counter. You how the noise level rises as the counter gets close to metal? And the needle moves? Then, as you pull further away the noise decreases, needle stops moving? Because of the "energy force" between the detector and the metal it is seeking? Like that, maybe. More like the magnet, though, but there's no life in metal. When it MOVES, though, BECAUSE of the magnet's FORCE... it "comes alive" in a sense. Like that.

But, then, I am reminded of Rev 6:9-11:
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those slaughtered because of the word of God and because of the witness they had given. They shouted with a loud voice, saying: “Until when, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, are you refraining from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” And a white robe was given to each of them, and they were told to rest a little while longer, until the number was filled of their fellow slaves and their brothers who were about to be killed as they had been.
YES! YES!!!!!!! When HE OPENED the seal! It was the same then: I couldn't have gotten into (or OUT of!) that world without HIM. HE OPENED the way for ME. I realized they had BEEN asleep but were "looking" at me when I stepped in. They COULD "look" at me, because they were AWAKE... because HIS presence AWAKENED them. YES!!
Somewhere it is written, dear one. Maybe not in the Bible... maybe in the Bible and none of us have seen it (there) yet. But it is written because he SAID... ALL that he tells me... IS written (somewhere).
Don't be surprised, then, if in your reading YOU are chosen to "find" it! If so, PLEASE share it with us here!
Peace to you!
YSSFS of Christ,
